Translation (EN)

Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that could intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

الْقَيُّومُ (Al-Qayyum)
Root: ق-و-م (Q-W-M)

Grammar: Intensive form (Mubalaghah) of the active participle. Denotes the One who exists independently by Himself and sustains all other beings.

Rhetorical Benefit: Paired with 'Al-Hayy' (The Ever-Living), it encapsulates both intrinsic life and all-sustaining authority.

سِنَةٌ (Sinah)
Root: س-ن-ن (S-N-N)

Grammar: Slumber, drowsiness, or pre-sleep lethargy. Contrasted immediately with 'Nawm' (deep sleep).

Rhetorical Benefit: Negating even the slightest precursor to sleep establishes unblemished, ceaseless vigilance over the cosmos.

لَا يَئُودُهُ (La ya'uduh)
Root: أ-و-د (A-W-D)

Grammar: Verb meaning to burden, weigh down, or fatigue.

Rhetorical Benefit: Sustaining billions of galaxies and earthly systems imposes no exertion or difficulty upon Omnipotence.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir

تفسير ابن كثير
Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim • 8th Century AH (774 AH / 1373 CE)
Methodology: Tafsir bi-l-Ma'thur (Quran explained by Quran, Sunnah, and Sahabah reports)
Ibn Kathir gathers the authentic narrations on Ayat al-Kursi: Ubayy ibn Ka'b was asked by the Prophet ﷺ which verse in the Book of Allah was greatest, and he answered 'Ayat al-Kursi', upon which the Prophet struck his chest gently and said: 'May knowledge be pleasant for you, O Abu al-Mundhir!' Ibn Kathir explains that 'Kursi' according to Ibn Abbas is the place of the two feet, and the 'Arsh (Throne) is immense beyond measurement. Nothing fatigues Allah in maintaining creation.
هذه آية الكرسي ولها شأن عظيم، وقد صح الحديث عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بأنها أعظم آية في كتاب الله... والكرسي موضع القدمين والعرش لا يقدر قدره إلا الله.

CLASSICAL TRADITION

Tafsir al-Tabari

تفسير الطبري
Jami' al-Bayan 'an Ta'wil Ay al-Qur'an • 4th Century AH (310 AH / 923 CE)
Methodology: Comprehensive Classical (Chain of Narration, Grammatical Analysis, and Scholarly Consensus)
Al-Tabari systematically analyzes each sentence. On 'man dhal-ladhi yashfa'u 'indahu illa bi-idhnih', he points out that the polytheists claimed their idols would intercede without condition. Allah severed this fantasy by decreeing that no creation—neither proximate angel nor sent prophet—can speak except by His explicit leave. Tabari documents differing views on 'Kursi', citing both the view of Ibn Abbas (that it is His Knowledge) and the primary view that it is an immense physical creation encompassing skies and earth.
وقوله: من ذا الذي يشفع عنده إلا بإذنه، إخبار من الله تعالى ذكره أنه لا أحد يشفع عنده لأحد إلا بعد إذنه له في الشفاعة.
Key Themes Emphasized
Refutation of unconditional pagan intercession
Grammatical syntax of Kursi
Companions' explanations of divine attributes

EARLY CLASSICAL

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

تفسير الجلالين
Tafsir al-Jalalayn • 10th Century AH (911 AH / 1505 CE)
Methodology: Concise Grammatical & Linguistic Exegesis
Al-Suyuti/Al-Mahalli notes: 'Allahu la ilaha illa Huwa' is the fundamental creed. 'Al-Qayyum' is the One who endlessly oversees the governance of creation. 'Sinah' is drowsiness, and 'Nawm' is sleep. 'Wasi'a Kursiyyuhu' denotes that His footstool encompasses the heavens and the earth; it is also interpreted as His dominion or knowledge. 'La ya'uduhu' means it does not burden Him.
الله لا إله إلا هو الحي الدائم البقاء، القيوم المبالغ في القيام بتدبير خلقه، وسع كرسيه علمه أو ملكه وقيل الكرسي نفسه.
Key Themes Emphasized
Brief lexical definitions
Absence of fatigue
Meaning of Kursi

CONCISE LINGUISTIC

Ma'ariful Qur'an

معارف القرآن
Ma'ariful Qur'an • 14th Century AH (1396 AH / 1976 CE)
Methodology: Contemporary Juristic, Pastoral, & Societal Reflection
Mufti Muhammad Shafi explains the philosophical coherence of the verse: polytheistic religions stumbled either by imagining God needs rest (like the distorted Old Testament concept of the Sabbath rest) or that intermediaries can force God's hand. Ayat al-Kursi demolishes both fallacies: Allah never tires, and intercession is purely by Divine grace and permission. He also discusses how modern humans struggle with anxiety because they anchor their security in frail created things instead of Al-Hayy Al-Qayyum.
اس آیت مبارکہ میں توحید کے دس عظیم الشان ارکان کو اس انداز سے بیان فرمایا گیا ہے کہ عقل انسانی ششدر رہ جاتی ہے۔

Refutation of divine fatigue myths
Psychological freedom through Tawhid
