Qur'an ↔ Tafsir Comparison

Compare classical opinions (Ibn Kathir, Al-Tabari, Al-Jalalayn) with contemporary pastoral commentary (Ma'ariful Qur'an). Each exegesis is kept in its distinct, attributed container with methodology and source verification.

Surah Al-Fatihah (The Opening)
Meccan Revelation • Ayah 1

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Bismillāhir-Raḥmānir-Raḥīm

Translation (EN)

In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

اسْم (Ism)
Root: س-م-و (S-M-W)

Grammar: Derived from 'Sumuw' (elevation/loftiness) according to Basran grammarians, or 'Simah' (mark) according to Kufans.

Rhetorical Benefit: Beginning with the name invokes the blessing, majesty, and exclusivity of the Creator before any human action.

الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Root: ر-ح-م (R-H-M)

Grammar: Al-Rahman is on the measure 'Fa'lan' (fullness, encompassing all creation in this world); Al-Rahim is on 'Fa'il' (permanent, specialized mercy for believers in the Hereafter).

Rhetorical Benefit: Coupling both names demonstrates vastness of divine grace followed by its unbroken continuity.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir

تفسير ابن كثير
Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim8th Century AH (774 AH / 1373 CE)
Methodology: Tafsir bi-l-Ma'thur (Quran explained by Quran, Sunnah, and Sahabah reports)
The Basmalah is recommended at the beginning of every action, speech, and writing. The companions confirmed it in the Uthmanic Mushaf at the start of every Surah except Surah At-Tawbah. Ibn Kathir highlights that 'Allah' is the supreme name (al-Ism al-A'zam) never applied to any created entity. 'Al-Rahman' is more intensive than 'Al-Rahim'. Ibn Jarir quotes al-Ash'ath that Al-Rahman is for all creation, while Al-Rahim is for the faithful.

Tafsir al-Tabari

تفسير الطبري
Jami' al-Bayan 'an Ta'wil Ay al-Qur'an4th Century AH (310 AH / 923 CE)
Methodology: Comprehensive Classical (Chain of Narration, Grammatical Analysis, and Scholarly Consensus)
Abu Ja'far al-Tabari establishes that 'Bismillah' means: 'I begin by mentioning the name of Allah and remembering Him before all other matters.' He weighs the lexical debates between the Basrans and Kufans on the origin of 'Ism' and favors the view that it marks that by which an entity is distinguished. Tabari cites early chains from Ibn Abbas confirming that 'Al-Rahman' denotes the One whose mercy has no equal.

تفسير الجلالين
Tafsir al-Jalalayn10th Century AH (911 AH / 1505 CE)
Methodology: Concise Grammatical & Linguistic Exegesis
Al-Mahalli states: 'Bismillahi' - I begin with the name of Allah. 'Allah' is the proper name of the True God. 'Al-Rahman' is the Possessor of expansive mercy, which means willing goodness for those who deserve it. 'Al-Rahim' denotes particular mercy. It is an Ayah of Al-Fatiha according to the Shafi'i school, making seven verses with it.

Ma'ariful Qur'an

معارف القرآن
Ma'ariful Qur'an14th Century AH (1396 AH / 1976 CE)
Methodology: Contemporary Juristic, Pastoral, & Societal Reflection
Mufti Muhammad Shafi notes that beginning with Bismillah transforms mundane actions into acts of worship (Ibadah). He explores how the pre-Islamic Arabs began deeds in the names of idols (Lat, Uzza), so Islam instituted Bismillah to anchor human consciousness entirely in monotheism. He also explains the psychological comfort of invoking Allah's mercy rather than His wrath at the outset of the Qur'an.
